Edge Deployment
Understanding on-device AI inference and deployment on edge hardware
What is Edge Deployment?

Edge deployment means running AI inference on a compute device physically located at the site — close to the cameras. The analytics processing happens locally, not in a remote data centre. Video never leaves the premises.
The term "edge" refers to the network edge: the point closest to where data is generated. An edge device is a compact, rugged computer — often a GPU-equipped embedded system — installed at the facility alongside or near the cameras. It receives raw video over the local network, processes it in real time, and sends only the results (detections, events, metadata) onwards.
Pixuate uses NVIDIA Jetson devices — specifically the Jetson TX2 and Jetson Orin — as its primary edge hardware platform.
What Edge Deployment Means for Your Pixuate Solution
When a Pixuate product is deployed on an edge device, all AI processing happens on the Jetson device installed at your site. Cameras connect directly to the device over your local network. No video stream is sent to the internet.
What this looks like in practice
- All processing is local. Video stays on-site. Only events, metadata, and alerts are transmitted — and only when connectivity is available.
- Works offline. The edge device continues processing and logging locally even if internet connectivity is lost. Data syncs when connectivity resumes.
- Low latency. Detections and alerts happen in milliseconds. No round-trip to a remote server.
- Pixuate edge hardware required. Supported devices are the Jetson TX2 (for lower camera counts) and Jetson Orin (for higher throughput and more complex analytics).
Best suited for
- Factory floors, warehouses, and industrial facilities where video data must not leave the site
- Sites with limited or unreliable internet connectivity
- Deployments requiring sub-100ms detection latency
- Security-sensitive premises (defence, critical infrastructure)
Compatibility
Pixuate products that list Edge: Jetson TX2 or Edge: Jetson Orin in their compatibility specification can be deployed on the corresponding Pixuate edge device. The Jetson Orin supports a higher camera count and more complex models than the TX2.
