Loitering Detection

Detects people who linger, wait, or pace within a monitored zone for longer than a configured dwell-time threshold. The system tracks each person's time in the zone continuously and raises an escalating alert — a warning at the threshold, an urgent alert if dwelling continues — with an evidence image and video clip per event. Tuned filtering separates genuine loitering from normal queuing or brief pauses, making it suitable for ATMs, entrances, car parks, lobbies, and public spaces where lingering can precede an incident. Runs on-device for 24/7 monitoring.

Key Features

Discover the powerful capabilities that make Loitering Detection stand out

Detects persons loitering beyond a configurable dwell time threshold

Configurable detection zones per camera

Continuous dwell time tracking per individual in the zone

Escalating alerts — warning at threshold, urgent if dwell continues

Works at ATMs, entrances, car parks, and public spaces

Evidence image and video clip per loitering event

Low false-positive filtering — queuing behaviour vs loitering

Edge deployment for 24/7 on-site monitoring

Technical Specifications

Detailed technical information about Loitering Detection

Camera:2MP+ IP CCTV (RTSP)
Deployment:Edge device or on-premises server
Dwell threshold:Configurable (seconds to minutes)
Output:Loitering event, dwell duration, zone ID, timestamp, image and video clip

Prerequisites & Limitations

What Loitering Detection needs to run reliably, and the operating limits to plan for.

Prerequisites

  • Camera: 2MP+ IP/RTSP overlooking the monitored zone (ATM, entrance, car park, public space)
  • Adequate illumination — pair with an IR illuminator for night monitoring
  • Stable bandwidth between camera and edge/server — roughly 4–8 Mbps per 2MP H.264/H.265 stream
  • Mounting for a clear view of the dwell area with people clearly visible
  • Stable power and network at the deployment point

Operating Limits

Factor Edge Server
Incident / event capture rate≤ ~5 events per second≤ ~20 events per second
Concurrent camera streams per node1–4 streams (Jetson TX2 / Orin)8–16+ streams
Minimum person/object size in frame≥ ~40 px height≥ ~40 px height
Event-to-alert latency< ~1 s on-deviceDepends on network round-trip

Indicative figures — actual limits depend on hardware, scene, and configuration.
