What is LED Signage in Traffic Systems?

LED signage in traffic and enforcement contexts refers to programmable display panels that show real-time information to drivers, pedestrians, or enforcement officers. Unlike static road signs, LED displays can change their message based on live data — showing a driver their current speed, displaying a warning when a violation is detected, or guiding vehicles through lanes with dynamic arrow indicators.

In AI-driven traffic analytics deployments, LED displays are the output layer: the system detects an event (a speed violation, a vehicle classification, a plate read) and the display communicates the result immediately — to the driver for feedback, or to officers for enforcement action.

A Speed Feedback Sign (also called a Vehicle Activated Sign or Driver Feedback Sign) is a roadside LED display that shows each passing driver their current speed as measured by radar or a camera-based speed system.

How they work

  1. A radar or video-based speed sensor measures the approaching vehicle's speed.
  2. The measured speed is sent to the LED display controller in real time.
  3. The display shows the speed in large, high-visibility digits.
  4. Optionally, the display changes colour or message based on speed vs limit: green digits for within limit, amber for slightly over, red for significantly over.

Purpose

Speed feedback signs are a proven speed calming measure — the act of showing a driver their speed causes most drivers to check and reduce speed, even without enforcement action. They are used in school zones, residential areas, construction zones, and at approach points to speed cameras.

Specifications

  • Digit height: 200 mm (residential) to 500 mm+ (high-speed road). Must be legible at approach distance.
  • Brightness: Auto-dimming based on ambient light — full brightness in daylight, reduced at night to avoid dazzling drivers.
  • IP rating: IP65 minimum for outdoor installation.
  • Power: Mains or solar-powered. Solar SFS are common in remote or temporary deployments.

Variable Message Signs (VMS)

A Variable Message Sign (VMS) is a full-matrix LED display capable of showing text, numbers, symbols, arrows, and pictograms — any message that can be composed from the LED matrix. Unlike a speed feedback sign (which only shows a number), a VMS can display full sentences, warnings, and graphical indicators.

Common uses in traffic and enforcement

  • Enforcement notifications: "SPEED RECORDED", "YOUR PLATE HAS BEEN READ", "VIOLATION DETECTED" — displayed immediately after a camera captures an event to confirm detection to drivers or officers.
  • Zone entry warnings: "CCTV ENFORCEMENT ACTIVE", "ANPR IN OPERATION", "SPEED LIMIT 40 KM/H" — displayed at zone entry points to inform and deter violations.
  • Lane control: Open/closed lane indicators with arrow symbols. Used in toll plazas, car parks, and managed motorway systems.
  • Incident messages: "SLOW DOWN — INCIDENT AHEAD", "ROAD CLOSED — TURN LEFT" — dynamically updated by operators in response to live events.
  • Parking guidance: Available space counts and directional arrows in multi-level car parks.

Enforcement Display Boards

In some enforcement deployments, a dedicated display board shows the captured plate number, vehicle image thumbnail, detected speed, and violation type immediately after capture. This serves two purposes:

  • Driver acknowledgement: The driver sees their plate and speed — reducing disputes and increasing the perceived certainty of enforcement.
  • Officer confirmation: Enforcement officers at checkpoints can confirm the violation record in real time without checking a separate system.

Enforcement displays are typically mounted adjacent to the capture camera, facing the traffic stream, and are controlled directly by the Pixuate analytics system.

LED Display Technology

  • Pixel pitch: The distance between LED centres (e.g. P10 = 10 mm pitch, P6 = 6 mm pitch). Smaller pitch = higher resolution image from the same display size. Use smaller pitch for displays viewed at close range (car parks), larger pitch for high-speed roads where the display is seen from 100 m+.
  • Colour: Single-colour (amber or white) for speed and text displays — lower cost, high contrast. Full-colour RGB for complex pictograms and multi-colour enforcement messages.
  • Brightness: Measured in nits (cd/m²). Outdoor displays require 5,000–10,000 nits for daylight legibility. Auto-dimming reduces brightness at night.
  • IP rating: IP65 for standard outdoor, IP67 for wash-down environments (car washes, petrol stations).
  • Communication: Displays are controlled via Ethernet (most common), RS-485 serial, or 4G/Wi-Fi for remote locations.

LED Signage in Pixuate Deployments

  • Violation notification: Camera captures a red light or speed violation → Pixuate processes plate and speed → VMS displays confirmation message for 3–5 seconds.
  • ANPR gate control: Pixuate reads approaching plate → matches against permit list → triggers LED to show "PERMITTED — ENTER" or "NOT PERMITTED — STOP".
  • Parking guidance: Pixuate counts vehicles entering and exiting zones → sends available space count to VMS at zone entry.
