Wagon Count

Automated railway wagon counting and number reading system for rail freight operations. Reads the alphanumeric wagon identification codes stencilled on the side of freight wagons as a train passes a camera point, and counts the total wagons in a consist. Used for yard management, freight tracking, and operational reporting.

Key Features

Discover the powerful capabilities that make Wagon Count stand out

Automatic wagon count as a freight train passes the camera

Wagon number (ID code) reading from stencilled markings

Reads wagons at operational train speeds

Consist report — ordered list of wagon IDs and total count

Integration with freight management and yard systems

Timestamp and camera location per wagon read

Works in daylight and with IR-illuminated night deployments

Edge deployment for trackside installation

Technical Specifications

Detailed technical information about Wagon Count

Camera:2MP+ IP CCTV (RTSP), trackside mount
Deployment:Edge device or on-premises server
Output:Wagon ID list, consist count, timestamps, image crops per wagon

Prerequisites & Limitations

What Wagon Count needs to run reliably, and the operating limits to plan for.

Prerequisites

  • Camera: 2MP+ IP/RTSP at the track-side camera point, positioned to capture the side of each wagon as the train passes
  • Capture is camera-dependent — a global-shutter camera helps read codes cleanly on faster-moving consists
  • Adequate illumination — pair with an IR illuminator for night, tunnel, or yard capture
  • Stable bandwidth between camera and edge/server — roughly 4–8 Mbps per 2MP H.264/H.265 stream
  • Mounting for a clear, unobstructed side view of the wagon identification codes
  • Stable power and network at the track-side cabinet

Operating Limits

Factor Edge Server
Incident / event capture rate≤ ~5 events per second≤ ~20 events per second
Concurrent camera streams per node1–4 streams (Jetson TX2 / Orin)8–16+ streams
Minimum code character height in frame≥ ~20 px≥ ~20 px
Event-to-alert latency< ~1 s on-deviceDepends on network round-trip

Indicative figures — actual limits depend on hardware, scene, and configuration.
